Israel Raids Gaza Strip | Ahead of Invasion | Day 21

Gaza in Ruins | Destruction | 20 Days of Airstrikes

Prelude to the Invasion

The 21st day of the Israel-Hamas war marked a significant shift in the conflict. Israeli infantry, tanks, and soldiers entered the Gaza Strip, initiating ground action. This operation was not a full-scale invasion but rather a raid followed by a swift exit – a strategy akin to a “smash and leave”.Israel hamas war

Israeli fighter jets and drones were also involved, providing air cover to the ground assets. The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) released a video of this raid, showcasing a column of tanks in action. This marked a significant escalation in the conflict, indicating that Israel was prepared to take more aggressive action.

The Impact of the Raid

The mission was reported to have achieved significant results. Israel claimed it destroyed Hamas missile launch sites and their command and control centers. These raids are crucial as they set the stage for a full-blown invasion. Similar raids were carried out on Wednesday night as well, marking two consecutive days of ground operations. The destruction of these sites would significantly hamper Hamas’s ability to launch attacks against Israel, potentially giving Israel an upper hand in the conflict.ISRAEL RAIDS GAZA STRIP AHEAD OF INVASION.

Statements from Israeli Defence Minister

Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, spoke about the impending invasion:

ISRAEL RAIDS GAZA STRIP AHEAD OF INVASION.

“We are waging war on the southern front against Hamas. We are prepared for any development in the north; however, we have no interest in expanding the war. Our goal is to win the war and return the hostages. The maneuver will come, and the day it will happen is not far off. It will happen when the conditions are right in order to strike Hamas organization.”

This statement indicates that Israel is prepared for a full-scale invasion but is waiting for the right conditions.

Public Opinion in Israel

Public opinion in Israel appears divided. A recent poll found that 49% of Israelis want to hold off the invasion, while 29% say go ahead, and 22% are undecided. This marks a shift in public opinion compared to a poll held on the 19th October when 65% of Israelis supported a ground invasion. This shift could be due to various factors such as concern for hostages inside Gaza or family members conscripted to fight.

International Response

The international community has also weighed in on the situation. The European Union (EU) leaders held a summit on Thursday and called for a humanitarian pause to allow aid. Charles Michel, President of the EU Council, stated:

ISRAEL RAIDS GAZA STRIP AHEAD OF INVASION.

“We can see the serious deterioration of the humanitarian situation and the importance of developing measures to guarantee access to equipment and humanitarian aid: food, water, electricity, medicines. We need to be very active, including humanitarian corridors, humanitarian forces to allow the humanitarian aid to be delivered.”

The UN Security Council must pass a resolution to pause the fighting. However, this is unlikely as Russia and China want a ceasefire.

Russia’s Potential Mediation Role

Moscow is hosting a Hamas delegation led by Musa Abu Marzouk, one of its founders and leaders. They discussed hostages; at least six of whom have Russian citizenship. This indicates Moscow’s stake in this conflict. If Putin can secure these hostages’ release, he could position himself as a mediator. This would not only potentially bring about a ceasefire but also enhance Russia’s clout in the Middle East.

The UN General Assembly

At the UN General Assembly, Arab nations have pushed a resolution calling for a ceasefire. Representatives from Israel, Jordan, and Palestine made statements at the assembly.

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s UN Envoy stated:

“My mission distributed and will continue to distribute QR codes with a direct link to files where you can see this horror and many other Hamas atrocities. What you see here are not pictures from outstreet, but Israelis raped, butchered and burned alive. One can see a terribly injured civilian – bloodied, yet alive – laying on the ground as a Hamas savage screaming Allahu Akbar repeatedly pummels the man’s neck with a garden hoe in order to decapitate him”

Ayman Safadi, Foreign Minster of Jordan responded:

“I don’t have videos to show you. We respect the dead too much; we respect the pain of their families too much to show videos. But check out your mobiles; thousands of videos depicting the abomination, the horror, the inhumanity to which thousands of Palestinians are being subjected and have been subjected.”

Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s UN Envoy added:

1,000 Palestinians killed every day; why not feel a sense of urgency to end their killing? Nothing can justify war crimes. Crime against humanity and genocide; nothing can justify the killing of a single Palestinian child.”

The Situation in Gaza

Death Toll Discrepancies

The death toll remains disputed. Officials in Gaza claim that more than 7,000 people have died.ISRAEL RAIDS GAZA STRIP AHEAD OF INVASION.

However, US President Biden disputes this number:ISRAEL RAIDS GAZA STRIP AHEAD OF INVASION.

“No notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed. I’m sure innocents have been killed and it’s the price of waging a war. I think we should be incredibly careful but I have no confidence in the number that the Palestinians are using.”

To dispute this claim, officials in Gaza have released a document with more than 200 pages long listing names of more than 7,000 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes.
