A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck northwestern districts of Nepal late on Friday night, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 150 lives and leaving dozens injured. This earthquake’s impact was so significant that tremors of 3.1 magnitude were felt as far as India’s capital, New Delhi, and the National Capital Region (NCR), over 800 kilometers (500 miles) away. The disaster unfolded with devastating consequences, and there are concerns that the death toll may rise as communication with many affected areas has been disrupted.

The Affected Areas:

The initial information provided by the US Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 5.6, with a depth of 11 miles. However, Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring & Research Center located the epicenter in Jajarkot, which is approximately 250 miles northeast of Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.

Two districts in Nepal bore the brunt of this destructive quake. In the Rukum district, many lives were lost, with numerous homes collapsing due to the force of the earthquake. Chief District Officer of Rukum West, Hari Prasad Pant, confirmed the tragic loss of life, and 30 injured individuals have been rushed to local hospitals for medical attention. In the neighboring Jajarkot district, government administration official Harish Chandra Sharma reported that 34 people were tragically confirmed dead as a result of the earthquake.

It is important to note that the death toll may continue to rise as rescue and relief efforts progress. Communication disruptions in affected areas have made it challenging to obtain real-time information and assistance.

The earthquake’s epicenter was identified in the Lamidanda area of Jajarkot district by officials at the National Earthquake Measurement Centre. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, a local official in Jajarkot mentioned that at least 34 people had been killed in the district. In the neighboring Rukum West district, a police official informed Reuters that at least 35 deaths had been reported, earlier  this morning.

One significant concern is the ripple effect of this earthquake. Tremors from the earthquake were felt in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) and some other parts of north India, according to the National Centre for Seismology. This serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of seismic activity in the region, where a major quake in Nepal can resonate as far as the Indian capital.

This earthquake is not an isolated incident. It marked the second earthquake measuring more than 6 in Nepal in the last one month. On October 2, a quake of magnitude 6.2 had hit the country, adding to the challenges faced by the region in terms of disaster preparedness and recovery.

Relief and Rescue operations:

“Honorable PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachand” expressed his deep sorrow on human and physical damage caused by the earthquake. All 3 security agencies for rescue and relief are mobilized.” PMO, Nepal informed on microblogging site ‘X’. PM Dahal also visited the affected area via Helicopter and evaluated the damage and rescue operations. Since the affected areas are located far west of the country and Geographically it is a tough terrain, the rescue teams are facing serious challenges in operations. The quake hit areas are also backward and have poor infrastructure, the hospitals are already running out of medical supplies. Nepal has suspended all flights to airlift the distressed people if needed.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his concern over the situation in Nepal and tweeted ” deeply saddened by the loss and lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our Thoughts are with the bereaved families and we wish the injured a quick recovery.

The devastating earthquake in Nepal has raised concerns about the need for enhanced earthquake preparedness, response, and recovery efforts in this seismically active region. The true extent of the damage and the number of casualties are expected to become clearer as rescue and recovery operations continue.
